"What you choose to do with your gift, well, that's entirely up to you." - Charles Xavier
Introduction
This deck has HEAVY hitting thwarting. X-men allies can jump in to your aid, providing thwarting support and chump blocking as needed. However, Phoenix's consistency to remove large amounts of threat allows her connsistent opportunities to take enemy hits and fall back into her alter-ego and use her recovery stat, which in turn provides her more resources. Down Time Helps keep her afloat if you're taking hits often, since she's encouraged to use her recovery stat.
Gameplan
The primary goal behind this deck was to push her high starting hero thwart of 3. Here are the cards that help us achieve this goal:
- Heroic Intuition - Simple: this card gives her hero +1 thwart, bringing her up to a 4 thwart while she's in her restrained form. 2 cost isn't too steep for Phoenix when she has a starting wild resource generator on the board.
- Making an Entrance - Not every hero benefits from this card, as thwarting is typically more efficiently done with event cards. However, Phoenix is a near perfect fit for this card. She's able to take hits without defending/exhausting, but needs healing afterwards. When she has Heroic Intuition in play, this card gives her 6 thwart total. I often play 2 player games, so when most side schemes come in with 3 threat/player (6 total), this card fits in BEAUTIFULLY, keeping her in hero form longer!
- Mission Training - This card isn't necessarily related to her hero thwart, but allies help bring the threat down just enough to utilize the Making an Entrance interrupt ability. As stated before, Phoenix doesn't need chump blocks, so she can keep allies in play. Certain scenarios punish chump blocking, so this deck and this card work well for those scenarios.
Final Thoughts
I've also explored Justice Served, which allows her to ready up after she removes all the threat from a scheme. I haven't typically used this card, but when Phoenix can thwart for 6, and she can ready and thwart for 4!? I love this card. If you wanted to focus less on upgrading allies and add Justice Served instead, I would replace Mission Training & Ready to Rumble.
I digress. Phoenix is near unstoppable when it comes to the thwarting game. Her hero stats, her ability to generate resources easily, which in turn can pay for supports that generate more resources or abilities, and the list goes on. Phoenix can hold her own, dealing medium amounts of damage. However, if you have a 2nd player/hand who can clean the board of minions and attack the villian... well, there's no stopping the heroes in this story.
Phoenix in justice is amazing!
