I believe in Grant Ward. I mean, I must, considering I think this is the third or fourth deck I’ve published recently centered around or heavily making use of him. But a 0-cost 2/2 with 3 health is just so outrageously useful, even with his potential risk. He’s especially good for heroes with low hand size or weird economic issues.
Which Nightcrawler can have depending on how you build his deck. Bamf is such a precious resource that everything revolves around, and that can severely limit your options sometimes. Or at least it would if just about every other card in the deck wasn’t free.
With seventeen 0-cost cards in the list this deck needs 0 double energy cards, and yet moves like lightning. These cards may cost 0 to play, but they’re the real heroes of the deck.
The Zero Heroes:
One Way or Another needs no introduction, but it absolutely needs to be in a Nightcrawler deck. Scout Ahead so perfectly deals with extra side schemes, and Multitasking and Clear the Area can pick up the slack. Passion for Justice pushes everything up just that little bit more. Skilled Investigator and Turn the Tide are Zero Heroes that piggyback nicely.
Chance Encounter makes for a beautiful zero cost addition to any side scheme, whether it be player or encounter. And with our Zero To Hero Grant Ward, Chance Encounter can fetch an always playable ally even if you’re out of resources. Daytripper is the only other ally and should absolutely be played as often as possible.
Face the Past is a Zero Heroes that comes with 3 damage to the face courtesy of Azazel, but that ready and 3 cards are remarkably helpful for keeping the energy flowing. And Azazel can easily be dealt with by means of a Turn the Tide or Port and Punch.
Port Away can get you out of a jam if you find yourself with no Bamfs available. Remember it’s not a hero action, so if you have this in your hand you can flip down naturally and dig a Bamf out of your deck. Use that along with Port Away to flip back up and now you have a Bamf in your discard pile to retrieve with your hero action.
The rest of the cards are what you’d expect. Endurance to keep health available. I actually play Nightcrawler a little tanky, preferring to use Bamf for effects other than blocking pretty often, so either defending or just taking hits to the face and then recovering later makes him play more smoothly to me.
X-Jet is a great way to keep Grant around when the encounter deck is feeling treacherous, and can be retrieved via Build Support.
I prefer Deft Focus to X-Gene as they can pay for all the same cards and Deft is easier to get into play. And Deft can actually pay for the Tail too
Superpower Training gets you the Cutlasses.
And Generation X is your second copy of Teleport Drop typically. It feels amazing to put a Chance Encounter on Gen X and clear it, grabbing Daytripper and Teleport Drop. Play Amanda and get your free Bamf, drop the villain on its head and then use your hero power to dig the Bamf out of the discard and pop it right back on the villain. And since they’re stunned that Bamf will likely stick around for a minute giving you a chance to get some extra Port and Punch damage on the villain before eventually using it up to block.
