Groot has Growth counters for a reason — and this deck would rather use them for Groot's powerful abilities than spend them absorbing every attack.
The strategy is built around perfect defenses. Armored Vest and Defensive Conditioning raise Groot's DEF, allowing him to stop most attacks before they ever reach his Growth counters. Defensive Conditioning also increases his hit point ceiling, giving Fighting Fit additional breathing room to consistently deal 5 damage.
Desperate Defense pushes this even further. The additional DEF makes taking no damage extremely reliable, and when the defense succeeds, Groot readies immediately. This allows him to protect the table without sacrificing his next activation.
Hard to Ignore rewards those perfect defenses by removing threat from the main scheme. With three copies in play, every successful defense can remove 3 threat while Groot simply does what he already wants to do: stand there and refuse to move.
Energy Barrier, Electrostatic Armor, Dauntless and Vine Shield add additional layers of protection and retaliation, helping Groot preserve both his health and his Growth counters.
Those saved Growth counters can then be spent where they actually matter: Root Stomp, I. AM. GROOT!, Fruition, Entangling Vines and Lashing Vines allow Groot to turn his accumulated growth into damage, threat removal and powerful activations.
Charlie-27, Martyr, Rocket Raccoon and Starhawk provide backup when Groot needs a break, absorbing pressure when preserving Growth counters is more important than taking another attack himself.
Groot isn't trying to survive by spending his Growth counters.
Protect the growth. Defend perfectly. Then let Groot do what Groot does best.
