An unusual pairing. A bizarre deck. A winning strategy?
As soon as I saw Blade I fell in love. A 1-cost Ally with incredible benefits but a massive drawback. I straight away knew I wanted to build a deck around him that could turn his disadvantage into a strength.
Strength being the optimum word. With Blade you can keep attacking and thwarting every single turn without ever taking consequential damage!! The only catch is you need to discard a strength card each time to do so.
Who better for this than The Incredible Hulk. Other heroes tend to have a mix of different resources. Hulk's deck is all strength except for Banner's Laboratory.
Strategy
This is a leadership deck with Blade included as the only ally. The goal is to get him on the board as quickly as possible, buff him and then let him mainly thwart while Hulk focuses on attacking.
I picked leadership for two reasons:
-
It's brilliant at tutoring allies. With a mulligan, Banner's Experimental Research and three copies of Call for Aid, you have more than a 1 in 4 chance of getting Blade on turn 1 (thank the Marvel Champions gods for making him an Avenger).
-
You can buff Blade. Inspired and Mighty Avengers mean Blade can thwart for 3 or attack for 4 every turn without ever leaving the board. Even better, with Get Ready he can do both! In one of my playthroughs the two Get Ready cards in my hand meant Blade with his upgrades dealt 15 damage in one turn.
In total there are just 7 of the 40 cards which aren't strength, just in case there is an annoying villain card you need to shake. Even with Blade's thwarting, you can't afford for Hulk to flip to alter-ego often, so Endurance helps make him even tankier.
I'm surprised by just how much fun this deck is. The most infuriating thing about Hulk is you often find yourself never drawing the card you need each turn. With a buffed up Blade on the board, you'll always be able to do something useful every turn. Enjoy!

Jun 11, 2022Like the idea! I would, however see cards like Sky Cycle for Blade. Also, why no other allies? If they're not Avengers they won't prevent Call for Aid from getting you Blade. For instance, Lockjaw, Machine Man, Mockingbird... all allies too. |

I kept Blade as the only ally for thematic reasons - I like the idea of having Hulk and Blade fight together all by themselves. Will def toy with non-Avenger allies as well though and see how that plays. |

Jun 13, 2022Maybe I am misunderstanding. Since Blade has strength of three and has one asterisk next to both his thwart for 1 and attack for 2, he exhausts and gets one damage if thwarts or attacks. Yet, he gets discarded after either thwarting or attacking unless use a red fist from hand. Thus, the most he could do is attack or thwart once for three turns and must pay a red fist twice as gets discarded after three turns due to damage (astericks). Am I missing something? |
Jun 13, 2022Dang I confused the asterisk with the consequential damage icon. Ignore my above comment! |
Jun 15, 2022I made some changes - marvelcdb.com - mostly just cutting down to singletons of things that are one offs. Added in the resource cards (still worth it even though not fists, can also help with Abomination nemesis), plus cost reducers/draws. Added a couple of extra cards to buff Blade (Sidearm, Sky Cycle). Plan B is TBC but better than being stuck with one card in hand. Symbiote Suit make Hulk an ultra tank and helps with cards. Plus a touch of healing for Blade depending on what comes out. |
This looks like good fun. Can't wait to try it out
