Hi welcome to the seventeenth in a series of decks I plan to build directly influenced by the amazing Get Up and Game! Perfect Match-Up series found here: https://youtu.be/1I2q3sT6FoA Please check out the channel and the video since I thought it was an amazing gift to the community and it inspired me to start playing Champions more regularly.
My goal with this series is to create a unique deck inspired by each challenge match-up in the video using all the suggested cards plus some of my own to create a deck that any player can use to check out the challenge. If you’re missing some cards from a deck please ask in the comments and I’ll do my best to find replacements from your collection so that you can have fun too! Hopefully I can build a deck that can beat the villain on both standard and expert. I’ll try to document any tweaks I made while playing the deck too.
The Sinister Six are back and this time against the mighty Drax! I was a bit apprehensive as my last time facing them on expert was a lot more difficult than I expected. I crushed the scenario on Standard! Then lost badly on my first expert game. I drew pretty much only resources and defensive counter cards in my opening hand after a mulligan which was just very unfortunate. To play this deck well you really need to get some of Drax's upgrades out as early as possible so I recommend hard mulligan for DWI Theet Mastery and Drax's Knife. Mantis is also great to have first turn. After that loss I removed the three double resource cards that I usually put into a deck as the cost curve in this deck is just too low and you want as many weapons at your disposal as possible. I just replaced them with a third copy certain events I only had 2 of previously. My second Expert game was going fairly well until I drew Shadow of the Past and it slightly threw me off leading to a loss on threat on the main scheme and I only had 1 threat left the clear on the Chase side of Light at the End! Thankfully I came back after this with 2 Expert back to back wins!
The core strategy here is to quickly build Drax's attack stat to 4 or 5 and then just continually attack and draw cards with a combination from Drax's built in response and DWI Theet Mastery. To this end you want to be very aware of the cards in your hand as often you do want to defend an attack but it can sometimes be better to take a hit to the face if you have a hand full of Leading Blow and no way to ready in the hero phase. One of the ways I struggled with Miles was that I would take out the last Villain and then have additional attack and no way to use it. Thankfully Bait and Switch is a great way to keep the main scheme clear AND draw out another member of the Sinister Six for a beatdown.
Once your attack stat is at 4-5, you can use a combination of Counter-Punch and Payback on defense and Limitless Stamina, "Fight Me, Coward!" and What Doesn't Kill Me to hammer away at your foes. Knife Leap can also make quick work of Life-Size Decoys and the retaliate from Drax's Other Knife can also help whittle them down. Intimidation can also be a huge help in either clearing the main scheme or putting in that last bit of threat removal on Light at the End.
You also have a couple upgrades like Endurance to keep you alive, Unshakable to combat your Obligation and Scorpion as well as Electrostatic Armor for a little extra damage. You can use Shake it Off and Parry for damage prevention. I try not to use Not Today! very often since it does not ready Drax but it can sometimes be the difference between a loss and win. I didn't playing C.I.T.T. in my games but it is a good back up way to ready Drax if you draw a hand full of cards you can't use at the moment.
All in all I had a ton of fun with this deck and this match-up. Drax protection feels like it just keeps getting better and better!
