"They should really put the warning before the spell" ~Dr. Strange

Player Count/Type : 2-4p / Johnny, Spike
Power Level: High
Fun: High
Key Cards: Cloak of Levitation, Spiritual Meditation
I was inspired by a recent deck from the legendary andyr called "Scott's Pouches" and thought it would be fun and thematic to make a similar style of deck with Dr. Strange. Nothing new or game-breaking here, other than relying less on invocations, which turns out to be really fun.
"Dr. Strange doesn't need to spam multiple readies per turn to be powerful. Instead, meditating on a spellbook of with a variety of options is both potent and supremely enjoyable. Hopefully the other players at the table don't look at you sideways just for bringing him." ~D.M. Tip
"By the Vishanti!"
Where evil lurks, Dr. Strange is there to confront it, spellbook in hand. What does he have in his spellbook? I say he has Thwart events in them to stop plotting villains in their tracks.
"Behold, the Eye of Agamotto!"
The Eye, Cloak of Levitation, and Quincarrier power up his spellcasing and enable him to cast multiple invocations each turn while still affording the opportunity to summon allies or cast thwart events. Invoke the title of the Sorcerer Supreme to unlock even more power in your fight against evil.
Unleash the Tome of Oshtur
Spiritual Meditation and Winds of Watoomb let you cycle through your deck quickly to get just the right Thwart event for the situation.
While Strange's power level is curbed in this deck because he isn't hyper-focused on invocation-deck cycling, your built-in readies with Cloak of Levitation are enough to keep you slinging spells with potency.
"By the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth!"
With threat completely neutralized, feel free to focus on lesser used spells like Magic Blast to agument damage or give away your Avengers Mansion card to the Agg player to defeat the villain more quickly. Deliver defensive support via Seven Rings of Raggadorr and status conditions through Images of Ikonn and Crimson Bands of Cyttorak. Throw up a Protective Ward to nuke treacheries and don't be afraid to cast Magical Enhancements on your ready-rich teammates.
Strange New World
Dr. Strange is difficult to get for newer MC players, and he may simply be ignored by OG players because of his power level. With that in mind, the same spellbook concept can work for other mystics, like Scarlet Witch and Magik. The key is 3x Spiritual Meditation to cycle through a variety of Thwart events to get exactly what you need at that moment.
Mirror Dimension
If you are limited in collection, feel free to sub what you're missing w/ multiple copies of flexible Thwarts, like For Justice! and Three Steps Ahead. Because my focus is typically 3 or 4 players, I enjoy Even the Odds and Overwatchwhich were reprinted with NeXt Evolution. Additionally, if you go with Magik's Spellbook, you can focus on Gunboat Diplomacy and/or Mutant Peacekeepers.
I hope this inspires you to go on a mystical adventure and try something different!
~Peace

Dec 31, 2025I have enjoyed a renewed interest in 2025 with Strange too. He’s actually really fun if you can not be a complete degenerate and simply play invocations. He has a lot to like! |

I always like seeing new ways to play Mr. Strange that aren’t just abusing his OP invocations.
