The goal of this deck is to get Gwen into her defensive rhythm! Once she’s built up she’s (almost) invincible. I’m still in the process of testing and refining this deck but I’m excited to start posting decks so here goes!

In Across the Spider-verse the movie opens up with Gwen playing the drums (hell yeah), which she also does in the art on her alter ego side lol. As a percussionist myself I wanted to lean into that thematically with the idea of a “defensive rhythm”

Ideally we want to be constantly using defense events with the response or interrupt keyword to continuously be ready heading into the hero phase. This can’t always happen, and often where this deck will struggle is with encounter sets that cause the villain to attack a second (or even third) time. Her ability to ready back up only triggers in the first instance, so she can only defend herself a maximum of two times. It’s important to include several targets for her ability to ready back up. In total this deck has 21 response/interrupt events. The only events without that keyword are Across the Spider-Verse and Parental Guidance. The events you run can vary depending on what cards you have, more of the “must haves” or important elements are in the other categories. Before I had the silk hero pack I would use Jump Flip. I suggest switching things in until you find what works best for you!

Unflappable is one of the most important cards in the deck, because card draw is highly valuable. You’re defending practically every turn and ideally not taking damage. In return we get card draw, yay! In combination with Gwen’s Web-Bracelet that means we can draw 3 cards when we play an interrupt/response to help defend without taking damage. This sets up the hero phase to be effective since you will have anywhere from 5-7 cards depending on what you used to pay for the events. Helicarrier helps a lot when paying for events or other upgrades.

I included my favorite web warrior allies in this, most of which are in protection. The new Scarlet Spider ally offers a backup if Gwen ever takes damage. Spider-UK provides great return damage on any foes who dare attack him. Silk lets you get rid of a treachery card you hate (I almost always pick shadows) and Spider-Man is just frickin awesome. If you want to lean more into allies I say go for it! If you do it could be worth it to include Team-Building Exercise and Web of Life and Destiny. The web warrior allies are super fun, so just include your favorites!

Thanks for checking this out, I hope you enjoyed!

Love Stop Hitting Yourself with Gwen! I haven’t tried it yet, so this is making me want to get back in green! Plus, I like that it isn’t reliant on a ton of upgrades to get going. Great deck!

I always forget that Web-Bracelet has tech! Spider-Byte is a great inclusion here. This looks solid! It's making me want to get Ghost-Spider back to the table.

I've been looking for a Stop Hitting Yourself deck for Gwen, I'll take this for a spin. Nice work and great write-up, very fun! All about the rhythm!

@Astrodar I was excited to get to play an ally for 1 cost, it’s a great card!

Nice deck. I really want to incorporate Stop Hitting Yourself into my Ghost-Spider deck somehow since it's her picture on it. They're effectively like more Ghost Kicks for her except you need to play a defense card first to make them as cost effective.

Also, I can't tell if you're aware based on your paragraph about card draw, but you can only use one Web-Bracelet per response/interrupt trigger. So you can't really end up with 7 cards in hand (unless you use a Defense card from George Stacy).

I'm playing a quite similar build, and I found that Energy Shield with Spider-Man is just nuts. I really suggest you giving a try, it really helps you to have Spider-man in play all game. (I used to struggle a bit with twharting, and that solve most of my problems). If you try it, you'd probably want to change a little bit of your events, to add more lightning resources.

Also... what about replacing one Armored Vest for 1 Electrostatic Armor ? (Another tech for Spider-Byte, and a useful response)? I can get your point in playing 2 copies, but do you really think you need them?

@eapfel I did miss that about the web bracelets… oops. Theoretically you would still get the card draw in the attack phase or from a second defense so I guess I haven’t messed it up too bad lol. In terms of the number I was estimating and also incorporating paying for a 1 cost with helicarrier and an additional card draw from unflappable which would still be 6 so you’re right lol. Thanks!

@wehehe I like that idea with energy shield, I’ll totally give it a try! I appreciate the suggestion with electro static armor too, also a great idea but I don’t have that card since it’s just from the hulk pack. I tend to run 2 copies of upgrades that I really want in play so I have a better chance of getting them in play sooner, and I like to essentially use the 2nd copy as a resource after I have one on the table. Thanks for your input!

Love this deck! Awesome stuff.

@tommycross, so glad you like the idea! Keep in mind that if you just add the shields, you'll probably miss some energy resources. You'll probably have to adjust some other things to make it work, but I think it can be done without changing the spirit of your deck.

I'm playing with 16 energy cards, and just 2 wilds, and almost always have a lightning in hand. If it can give you some ideas, this is my list.

Isn't Ripost better than "Stop Hitting Yourself"? AFAIK, you won't get defense bonus for "Never Back down" and "Not Today" since those provide defense against the attack you're playing "Stop..." post-attack. Ripost deals 3 damage at 1 cost, and "Stops..." will hit 3 damage (4 only got the Vest) for 2 cost.

@CoyotesOwn Stop Hitting Yourself specifically allows you to use the boosted DEF. It looks at your DEF “for that attack.” So it has a much higher ceiling than Riposte.
