Whenever you watch the X-Men TV show or any of the movies, have you stopped to ask....does he have a cell phone? I mean, you don't really need a cell phone when you have a couple of powerful telepaths at your disposal. But could you imagine a world where Erik...discovers cell phones.
This deck, isn't the strongest or the fanciest way of playing Magneto. Hate to break it to you. But is this deck fun? Of course, that's why I'm putting it on this website. I've only played one game with it against standard Crossbones and ended up winning before my first deck pass. Was it because of the combination of cards I decided to use was the reason? Meh, probably. Not gonna lie, Magneto is pretty resilient and strong on his own. He's the kind of hero where you don't really need the aspect to do the heavy lifting.
Anyway, what's the point of the deck? Let's start with Magneto's ability, Magnetic Pull. You discard cards until you find a magnetic card and add it to your hand. This works in tandem with Magneto's Cape and Magneto's Armor. Refresher course, start with either thwarting or attacking if you didn't defend during the villain phase. Cool, you're exhausted. Now, trigger the ability. Whoops, there goes some nice cards, meh don't worry about it, ooo a magnetic card, add that to hand. His armor triggers by checking to see what resources you ended up discarding and adds at least +1 for at least one resource discarded. That sentence was word soup. Sorry. So, for a mental: +1 thwart, physical: +1 attack, energy: +1 defense. The cape, also triggers, which will in turn readies Magneto. Cool, you're ready, time to punch?
Not quite. There's two other upgrades and an ally that wants to help out with your next basic activation: Synch, Soaring Acrobatics, and Cell Phone...see.....it's.......the theme of the.......nevermind. To the players who main aerial heroes, congratulations, you know what Soaring Acrobatics does. But to the rest of us that don't...it gives you +1 for that basic power. Synch is Soaring Acrobatics but in ally form. You exhaust him to give you +1 to your basic power choice. And Cell Phone is almost the same. You can use a counter to exhaust the phone to then choose a player (most of the time, it'll be you) and you will get +1 towards either attack or thwart. I mean, it kinda blows if all you wanna do is attack attack attack. But Mag's can do a little bit of everything. It kinda depends on what you end up discarding that will point you in which direction you could go. Synch and Soaring can help you in either way, while Cell Phone is there to bring up the rear.
Cool, we got somewhat of a game plan with the more important upgrades for Mag's. Now what? I mean you have a pretty sick line up of allies at your disposal. With Utopia out, that will increase your ally limit to one (because we're an X-Men deck) and it will allow you to ready an X-Men character. That's why I threw in an extra phone just in case you're able to get that second ready. But if you play X Gonna Give It To You, you're kinda boned for trying to do another increase into your third basic power activation. But by that time, your increased stats from Mag's ability should be more than enough.
Assess the Situation and Avengers Mansion are there for that sweet extra card draw. I'm pretty sure with Assess, I was able to find some good stuff sooner to finish off Crossbones faster. Then again, it's Crossbones. But I have had games with bones that he schemed all the way into the third stage, hit me for a good chunk of damage and then Madam Hydra and her goons kinda took over. He's not as stingy as Rhino, but 'bones has his moments. Team-Building Exercise Deft Focus and Clarity of Purpose help round out for extra resources to help pay for stuff.
Almost forgot to mention that "To Me, My X-Men!" has come in clutch to bring out an ally for their enters play abilities. The ones that stand out are Professor X, the Phoenix ally, and Cyclops. Prof for the ready and 3 threat removal, Phoenix to ready and heal an ally, and Cyclops for when you wanna make a final push, or if you have a big attack that you're winding up for. Angel? Well, with Uncanny X-Men he's a 1 thwart, 2 attack ally with 3 health that will end up costing you only 1 card to play after the double discount of his ability and Uncanny X-Men.
In conclusion, is this deck going to beat expert Venom Goblin, Thanos, Ronan or any other high powered villains? I mean, Mag's would put up a decent fight his his hero kit alone. But to be honest with you, no. I always think that those high powered villains could overwhelm this decklist because those villains hit the ground running in expert mode. How does this deck work for multiplayer? I mean, I bet it will do fine. Will it carry the team? It has the potential to do some damage and remove threat like a champ...from Marvel........get it!?....it's the name..........nevermind. I mainly built this deck to see if the stuff I threw together would work well with the armor and cape to see his stats go up. This is probably the kind of decklist that your kid or little cousin cooked up, gives it to you and you say "You know what, little human being that I may or may not have some sort of relative to my family, this decklist is pretty good. In fact, I'm gonna put it right here on the fridge so everyone can appreciate it." And then the fridge gets over run by your brothers test grades, their pictures, an oversized calendar your Mom had to have cover the main front of the door, so all of the stuff gets piled together and stuff into a cupboard that some use as spare paper to make notes on. And then you grow up, forget about the little decklist Timmy wrote for you, and one day, you open the drawer, see the little decklist and go wow, that Tommy was really on to something. "Wasn't their name Timmy?" Yeah probably. I dunno. At the end of the day, I hope you have fun with this deck. Because I'm having a blast. Now, I'm gonna go outside and throw the ball around with Jimmy....but it'll just be me throwing the ball against the garage door because Sammy doesn't exist and I have no friends.
