Magneto has some interesting deck building challenges. You can't count on seeing any of his aspect cards as you can easily mill past them. This can make combo decks difficult. Also his kit cards don't give you a way to safely flip down to alter-ego but he does have an interesting alter-ego ability. As a fan of combo decks and being able to flip back and forth between alter-ego and hero side this deck tries to solve those challenges.
The combo we are to try to focus on is using Psylocke to keep the villain in a constant state of confusion while bringing her back using Erik's Survivor ability and Cerebro whenever she leaves play.
To do this we need to:
Get Cerebro into play.
- We can do this by drawing Cerebro itself, playing Forge and grabbing Cerebro, or playing and defeating Build Support. With three ways to get Cerebro we are unlikely to mill past all of them.
Get Psylocke in play.
- With Cerebro in play you can use it to grab Psylocke once you start your second pass through the deck if you weren't able to get her in play on your first pass through the deck. This is a sure thing as long as you have Legion, White Queen, or Professor X in play. So once you have Cerebro in play you have four cards, counting herself that allow you to grab her and are unlikely to mill past them all.
Make sure that whenever Psylocke goes to the discard pile that you are in hero form and can flip to alter-ego and shuffle her back into your deck with Erik's Survivor ability. Then grab her with Cerebro and either play her immediately or on the next turn.
- To make sure this happens you want to avoid defending with her (which shouldn't be a problem as you have plenty of other allies that can defend) and cause her to be defeated by consequential damage right before flipping to alter-ego.
With this combo you should be able to flip every turn verse non-steady, non-stalwart villains as you can confuse the villain two out of every three turns with just normal Psylocke activations.
Against steady villains you will likely still be able to flip every turn as you can put a confuse on the villain every turn and will therefore have two confuses on the villain every turn you end in alter-ego as long as you can play Psylocke every other turn. This can be accomplished if the villain has retaliate or if you use Utopia to ready and then activate Psylocke once every two turn so that she takes enough damage to be defeated every two turns.
Stalwart villains will be a problem.
Other cards in the deck:
Top priority setup cards outside our combo cards:
Resource generators prioritized from most to least:
- Avengers Mansion
- Helicarrier
- The X-Jet (tied with Helicarrier if you get Honorary X-Men Magneto)
- Team-Building Exercise
- Moira MacTaggert
- Magneto's Helmet
Allies:
- Psylocke is what we are building around
- Forge helps us setup
- White Queen or Legion are needed for Cerebro (but can be grabbed by Cerebro with Psylocke if you can keep Psylocke out for two alter-ego flips against a non-steady, non-stalwart villain)
- Gambit, Tempus, and Professor X can allow us to safely flip if we haven't gotten Psylocke online.
- Angel, Beak, and Triage are cheap defenders, can activate Utopia, and provide additional value.
- Colossus can provide two defenses and does good damage.
- Wolverine is our best way to deal with tough status cards
Other cards included but not crucial to the deck:
- Honorary X-Men while on Magneto it lets us use still do all the following while in alter-ego: use the The X-Jet, ready Erik with Utopia, play Tempus, play White Queen, and/or play The X-Jet
- Combat Training has good value if you are readying Magneto with Magneto's Cape and Utopia every turn.
- Boot Camp, well we have lots of allies so why not?
