It's my first published deck, so be gentle!
It's a slight variation on a previously published deck, from 'KennedyHawk' which you can find here. Someone on the Marvel Facebook page was looking for a Thor solo deck and seeing as I've beaten the core box villains on expert mode, I thought I'd share.
Disclaimer: I've not had a chance to tackle Green Goblin and Wrecking Crew yet on expert, so I'll add some comments on those scenarios when I get around to them.
The differences: I found after a few plays in solo that I wasn't really using Avengers Assemble! or Strength In Numbers so I cut those from the deck and added an extra Avengers Mansion and a Helicarrier and took out The Triskelion. I found it was quite rare I would ever have more than two allies out at any one time as I would just use them to soak villain attacks. My focus was to try and get the extra card draw (with Thor's low hand size) while searching for Asgard and another cost reduction given the expensive allies in the deck.
I dropped Wonder Man as I wasn't consistently pairing him with Teamwork, so I picked up Falcon and Vision instead, as I felt I needed the extra ability to thwart against the main scheme. Falcon's ability came in quite handy at times, especially when Loki would make an appearance. My record was "killing" Loki four times, before I managed to get rid of him for good! +3 thwart with Vision is also super useful to have, and a great Get Ready target when you're against Klaw stage 3.
Teamwork I am on the fence with. In theory, it would be great with Wonder Man. Imagine this; Thor swinging in for a +6 regular attack when equipped with Mjolnir, get a ready with Lady Sif and swing for another +6 attack. Then a Hammer Throw for 20 damage. That's enough to kill a villain outright. Though when you're playing solo you're just throwing your "Warriors" in the way most of the time. I'd definitely keep that combo if you were in a multiplayer game, but as this deck is geared toward solo, I don't think there's any room for that.
So here's some tips when I tackled the core set villains:
Rhino: You just need to be aware out of the gate and try to keep the main scheme in check as you are looking to set up your board. If you get an Advance followed by one of the Expert encounter cards early on, the game can get away from you. Squirrel Girl is great for getting rid of the 'Tough' status cards, so I would look to try and get her in play with Make the Call if there's one than one 'Tough' status on enemies and you don't have a Lightning Strike on hand.
Klaw: Maria Hill and is the MVP in this match up. Given that Klaw schemes for a lot, consistently thwarting for two and getting the card draw is too good here. Vision and Falcon have also been good in this match up when you can get them Inspired and use the copies of Teamwork for a large attack or a not-so-large thwart. As the 'Tough' status cards are around in this game with the Armored Guards, a Lightning Strike or Squirrel Girl are once again very useful.
Ultron: As people will more than likely predict, Hawkeye is the MVP in this match up; consistently pinging away the Ultron Drones before they attack you is fantastic. I got great mileage from Squirrel Girl when Hawkeye was on the bottom of the deck, especially when you draw Ultron's side schemes; Drone Factory and Ultron's Imperative. Lightning Strike is also very useful for wiping out drones when Upgraded Drones is in play and you don't have the right combo of symbols to spend to get rid of it.
I hope this has been informative anyway and an alternative option for solo play as Thor. I've really enjoyed playing this deck as solo, as you're often left with some tough choices at the start of the game and it's all about weathering the storm, using Mjolnir as a resource while your allies are keeping the main scheme in check. I'll be back soon to give an update on the Green Goblin and Wrecking Crew scenarios.
Until then!
Great write-up! It's sometimes hard to leave out awesome combos from the deck, but I agree that in solo, it's all about consistency.
